Unveil

It is what God does when he takes the blinders off. He removes the veil that was over our eyes to see the glory of God. He makes us read what used to be a burdensome law as delightful instruction. But it was the same book! Yes, it was the same book, but now we see how beautiful, and true, and good it is!

David prays in Psalm 119 these words,

Psalm 119:18

    [18] Open my eyes, that I may behold

        wondrous things out of your law.

Charles Bridges writes,

“But do not even Christians often find the word of God to be as a sealed book? They go through their accustomed portion, without gaining any increasing acquaintance with its light, life, and power, and without any distinct application of its content to their hearts. And thus it must be, whenever reading has been unaccompanied with prayer for Divine influence. For we not only need to have our “eyes opened to behold” fresh wonders, but also to give a more spiritual and transforming (2 Cor 3:18) perception of those wonders, which we have already beheld.”

Unveil.

2 Corinthians 3:12-18

[12] Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, [13] not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. [14] But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. [15] Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. [16] But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. [17] Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. [18] And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Unveil. It is not merely the thing done at salvation when one turns to the Lord. It is what happens in answer to the prayer to unveil the word daily by the same of those in Jesus Christ who open his word in dependence on his grace.

It is also called a lifting. For before his saving grace in our lives, the veil remained “unlifted.”

Therefore, as we open the Word, we pray God open our hearts, unveil the eyes of our hearts for there are wondrous things to behold in the law of God. There are wonders in the word that angels long to look at. We simply pray what the angels feel toward the Bible, and God is pleased to unveil our hearts again and again. Unveil. I cannot forget that word, we must not forget that word. We read it as “Open…” in Psalm 119:18, but it in its heart of meaning is about taking the veil off.
